Recapping Friday’s Action. Non-Region Showdowns

Week 6 brought upsets, last-second finishes and a few results that could become much more important as the playoff picture begins to take shape. Let’s take a look at some of the top teams and most interesting results from the games on Friday.

Westbrook survives its biggest test

Westbrook Christian had dominated its way through the first month of the season, but with a hot Oneonta Redskins team coming to Rainbow City, this non-region matchup became one of the best games of the night.

Westbrook escaped with a 28-27 victory after stopping Oneonta on a late two-point conversion attempt, keeping the Warriors undefeated at 5-0.

After outscoring its first four opponents 191-33, this was a different type of win for Westbrook. The Warriors were pushed into the fourth quarter by a quality Oneonta team and found a way to survive.

Keep an eye on Oct. 23. Whitesburg Christian visits Westbrook in a matchup that could carry major implications in Private A Region 4.

Briarwood and ACA remain on a collision course

Two of Private AA’s best teams won in different ways.

Private AA No. 1 Briarwood survived No. 3 Montgomery Catholic 24-21, improving to 6-0 after its closest test of the season. The Lions possessed the ball for the final 4:38 and converted a crucial fourth down to prevent Catholic from getting another opportunity.

American Christian Academy had considerably less drama, ACA entered Thursday’s matchup with Tuscaloosa Academy with both teams sitting at 4-0. The Patriots left with a convincing 42-14 victory and improved to 5-0.

Now look ahead to Oct. 23. Briarwood and ACA are both 3-0 in Private AA Region 2, and the Lions travel to Tuscaloosa to face the Patriots that night. There is still plenty of football between now and then, but the possibility of an undefeated showdown with the region championship on the line is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Mountain Brook keeps climbing

Don’t look now, but Mountain Brook has completely changed the direction of its season. After consecutive losses to UMS-Wright and Homewood left the Spartans 1-2, Mountain Brook has won three straight, with Friday’s 10-3 victory over No. 9 Oxford being the biggest yet.

Mountain Brook is now 4-2 and hosts Ramsay next week before returning to region play against Calera.

Hoover loses on the final play

Hoover’s 20-17 loss to Knoxville Catholic was about as painful as they come.

Leading 17-14 in the fourth quarter, Malik Boggan appeared to give Hoover some breathing room with a 20-yard touchdown run, only for the score to be erased by a holding penalty. That left the door open.

Knoxville Catholic eventually got the football back and won the game on its final play, with Braylen Gibbs coming down with a desperation pass in the back of the end zone.

Hoover falls to 3-3, and there isn’t much time to dwell on it.

Thompson comes to the Hoover Met next week.

Maplesville wins No. 1 vs. No. 2

Class 1A No. 1 Maplesville and Class 2A No. 2 Luverne gave us one of the most intriguing ranked matchups of Week 6.

Maplesville made its statement on the road, the Red Devils came away with a 35-20 victory.

Maplesville now turns its attention back toward region play as the calendar flips to October.

Vigor goes on the road and handles Benjamin Russell

Vigor made the trip from Mobile to Alexander City and left with an impressive 20-10 victory over No. 5 Benjamin Russell.

The Wolves are now 4-1, with their only loss coming by two points down a few players against Orange Beach. Vigor returns to region play against LeFlore next week, but the back half of the schedule is worth watching. Williamson, Gulf Shores and St. Michael are all still ahead.

The Wolves remain firmly in the picture in what should be a fun and entertaining Region 1 race.

Alexandria keeps rolling

Another week, another great win for Alexandria.

The Valley Cubs went on the road to the Field of Champions and defeated No. 4 Piedmont 35-12, improving to 5-0.

Alexandria has now scored at least 35 points in every game this season, but October is going to tell us plenty more about the Valley Cubs. Central-Clay County comes to Alexandria next week before consecutive road games against Anniston and Leeds.

That’s a three-game stretch for an undefeated team trying to establish control of 4A Region 6.

Moody is back in the fight

Remember when Moody was 0-3?

The Blue Devils opened with losses to Briarwood, Helena and Alexandria — three opponents that have proven to be pretty good football teams. Since then, Moody hasn’t lost.

The Blue Devils followed wins over Anniston and Lincoln with a 20-17 victory over St. Clair County on Friday, completing a three-game turnaround that has brought them back to 3-3. More importantly, Moody is 2-1 in region play.

Next comes Leeds. A rivalry game that has heated up over the past few years, going back and forth.

After the way this season started, Moody has fought its way back into meaningful October football, and now turns their attention to a huge rivalry game.

Smiths Station finally gets one

It had been a long first half of the season for Smiths Station.

The Panthers entered Friday 0-5 before finally breaking through with a 28-20 victory over Wetumpka.

And this wasn’t just Smiths Station’s first win of 2026.

After back-to-back two-win seasons, any sign of progress matters for Smiths Station.

The reward? A trip to Enterprise next week.

200 for Jere Adcock

Whitesburg Christian scored 66 points in a 66-20 victory over Rogers.

The victory marked the 200th career win for Whitesburg head coach Jere Adcock.

Whitesburg is now 4-1 and has scored 117 points over its last two games.

The Warriors travel to Mars Hill next week, and there’s another date worth remembering: Oct. 23 at Westbrook Christian. If both teams keep winning, Adcock and the Warriors could be walking into one of the biggest Private A games of the season.

October is here

Week 6 didn’t settle much. It did set up plenty of great matchups to look forward to as we get into the homestrech of the regular season.
