BamaPreps Weekly Roundtable Week 3
Welcome to the BamaPreps Weekly Roundtable! Each week, the team will break down the
biggest matchups and the best performances across the state of Alabama. From Huntsville to
Mobile, the best coverage of the gridiron is right here on BamaPreps.
It’s Week 3, and we have a lot to unpack from all corners of the state! Time to spot the ball and
get to it.
What was the biggest surprise from Week 2 matchups?
VLAD VALASIUK: Orange Beach over Vigor. Heard there might’ve been some internal issues
for the Wolves, but it was a tough fight through and through.
TP HAMMOCK: Gulf Shores ending Saraland’s home winning streak
NOAH WILLOUGHBY: Might be biased because I was at the game but Homewood beating
Mountain Brook by as much as they did surprised me. I thought it would come down to the wire
like last year.
DAVID PARKER: Appalachian losing to Spring Garden.
TREY LEE: Orange Beach taking down an absolutely loaded Vigor squad.
JON LUNCEFORD: I picked Hewitt to beat Hoover, but dang. After a 22 point loss to
Hillcrest, they then turned around and put up 40 and beat Hoover by double digits – a team who
held Muscle Shoals and Opelika to 15 total points. Also Saraland falling by double digits to Gulf
Shores and Muscle Shoals putting up a goose egg against Florence. Then Thompson winning
49-0 against the supposed #2 team in 6A. I think it let us know no one is competing with
Thompson and Vestavia was WAY over ranked.
Best individual performance from Week 1?
VLAD: Trent Seaborn. He continues to lead an incredible Thompson team. I gave him the best
performance because of his record-breaking night.
TP: Davis Barnett, Bayside Academy:19-of-20 passes for 358 yards and 6 touchdowns
NOAH: Trent Seaborn. He broke the all time AHSAA passing record. I don’t think anyone
(legitimately) ever touches that.
DAVID: Brody Blevins – Westbrook Christian 7-9 for 219 yards passing. 12-105 rushing. 3 TD
passes and 1 rushing against Mars Hill.
TREY: Gotta go with Trent Seaborn – the new AHSAA all-time passing leader put on another
clinic against Vestavia this week to etch his name in the history books.
JON: Trent Seaborn breaking the all time AHSAA passing record has to be it. Sure, he’s been
starting since the playoffs of his eighth grade year, but it’s still impressive.
Pell City has not beaten Oxford in 13 years.
Will this be the year the Panthers take down the Yellow Jackets and break the streak?
VLAD: It’s been a tough start to the season for Pell City – I think that the Panthers are on the
right track despite the setback they faced before week zero kicked off.
Unfortunately, I think this Oxford team is just too good currently.
TP: Not yet, potentially next year
NOAH: I don’t think so. Coach Adams does a great job at Oxford and they’ve got some dudes.
Maybe in another year or two once Coach Ganus is back but it’s not going to be this year.
DAVID: No.
TREY: I am a proud alum of Pell City High School. I love the Panthers, but I don’t see it
happening this year. A big win over Pinson could boost the confidence of the Panthers in this
rivalry matchup.
JON: Nope. Better luck next year.
Other than Thompson, which team in 6A has impressed you the most this season?
VLAD: Prattville has won every game and dominant fashion, they’ve had some expectations but
flew a little under the radar. I would have to say them.
TP: Vestavia Hills regardless of last week
NOAH: Spain Park has looked good making the jump. I’m interested to see how long they can
hang in with Thompson this week.
DAVID: Prattville. I don’t think anyone had doubts after Bobby Carr arrived on the scene.
TREY: Hewitt-Trussville made a statement in Week 0 taking down Auburn in Duck Samford
Stadium, and despite a let down against Hillcrest Tuscaloosa the following week, they bounced
back in a big way by taking down Hoover this past week.
JON: The only unbeaten teams three weeks into the season are Thompson, Spain Park and
Prattville – all in region 3. I think Prattville is poised to do something special, but the competition
hasn’t been there yet. They are at Hoover and at Hewitt over the next two weeks and we will see.
Regardless, they have won their games by an average of 52.7 points. That’s impressive no matter
who you are playing.
Who are your early favorites in both private divisions after the first few weeks of action?
VLAD: Briarwood and Westbrook Christian. Westbrook picked up a huge win over Mars Hill,
and Briarwood looks absolutely unstoppable in class AA.
TP: Briarwood and Bayside Academy
NOAH: In AA it’s going to have to be Briarwood right now. Wins over Moody and Homewood
put them up there for me. Single A is gonna be Bayside. Coach Trotter has them clicking on
offense. They will be tough to beat.
DAVID: Briarwood in AA. Montgomery Academy or Bayside Academy in the south and
Westbrook Christian in the north. Too early to tell in Class A.
TREY: In Double A, I’ll go with Briarwood and UMS-Wright.
Single A: Westbrook Christian and Bayside Academy
JON: AA – Briarwood, no question. A – probably Bayside Academy.
What matchup are you most looking forward to most in Week 3?
VLAD: Theodore v Saraland. How will the Spartans respond?
TP: Wetumpka vs Russell County
NOAH: I’m interested to see what happens in the Wetumpka v Russell Co game. Is Russell
County a legit contender in 5A South?
DAVID: Not a lot of great ones at first glance but I’ll go with Florence at Russellville.
TREY: Opelika and Central-Phenix may determine who wins their region.
JON: Prattville at Hoover. The Lions are looking good, but haven’t played anyone yet.
Meanwhile, Hoover is licking their wounds from last week after a great first two games.
Bold Predictions for Week 3 across the State?
VLAD: Leeds defeats Central Clay County
TP: Another #1 goes down
NOAH: Opelika is going to beat Central Phenix City.
DAVID: Half the teams are going to lose.
TREY: Prattville takes down Hoover.
JON: Hoover drops another one this week and the Oak Mountain game next week all of the
sudden becomes real important.
Give me your current top picks for Mr. Football through the first few weeks of action.
VLAD: Trent Seaborn.
Trent Seaborn.
Trent Seaborn.
Trent Seaborn.
Trent Seaborn.
TP: Davis Barnett, Trent Seaborn, Jack Floyd
NOAH: Trent Seaborn, Trent Seaborn, Trent Seaborn, Trent Seaborn, and Trent Seaborn. Go
ahead and ship it to him.
DAVID: Trent Seaborn vs. the field? I’m going with Seaborn.
TREY: Trent Seaborn, Kole Moody, Jack Floyd, Lefebvre Watson, and Javion Sales
JON: 1. Trent Seaborn, 2. Davis Barnett, 3. Kole Moody, 4. Christian Richey, 5. Elston Hooper
Predictions & Final Score for Helena vs. Mountain Brook
VLAD: 28-24 Huskies
TP: 34-31 Mountain Brook
NOAH: 24-17 Helena keeps it rolling.
DAVID: Mountain Brook 28-27
TREY: Mountain Brook 35 Helena 21
JON: Helena wins 20-17
